About Andy

I was born in London, England, but have lived mostly in New Zealand since about 1986.

I recently moved from the capital, Wellington, to the wine growing region of Martinborough. I paint mostly in oil or acrylic, and sometimes combine both. The effects can be very interesting.

Most work is on canvas, but I have occasionally used board or wood. As an established artist I have exhibited and sold through high street galleries, websites, and regional exhibitions. I have happily delivered many commissions.

I was originally drawn to mood and atmosphere and am still fascinated with light, and how it manifests itself through the mediums of dust, rain, mist and reflection. All these elements come together in the urban landscapes that were a large portion of my earlier works. I like to find the unnoticed beauty and composition in the urban scenes that most of us pass through on a daily basis, but rarely stop to really look at. Most of my urban works are based around Wellington, although I have fulfilled commissions set in other locations.

More recently, after our move to '5mile' in rural Martinborough, I have discovered the joy of capturing moments of personal mood and emotion, both happy and sad. Much of the atmosphere of my work is expressed by inference, to be established and developed within the viewer’s consciousness.

Our move to rural Martinborough has added another dimension to my work. The skies are big, light quality is brighter and finer, and colours are more varied and resonant.

Rural living encourages greater introspection, and I find I am looking for subtler, more emotional, subject matter.

I am hesitantly experimenting with ‘plein air’ techniques, which seems to sit better in the rural environment rather than the urban.

We’ll see how that goes!
